The south pole desert could be problematic; but I think that with a little rotational axis, tidal locking, conservation of angular momentum mumbo jumbo, it could be explained very nicely.
EX: The planet's axis could be angled so that the southern half is always closer to the sun. That would also mean that a certain part of the desert is constantly exposed, which would make it UNBEARABLY HOT!!!. This could also be part of a cycle, rather like the reversal of the magnetic poles on Earth; so in the ancient past, the northern continent was a desert instead, and back and forth throughout geologic time.
I like this sort of stuff. Not that you'd know or anything!
Im glad so many people seem to like the idea, and have explanations that would actually make it work...sort of.
It could be that what is believed to be the south pole is just the northern tip of another continent. It could be magic. It could be just how this world works and will never have an explanation.
That's a pretty neat idea.
